The number-one misunderstanding about Mississauga's Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate: homeowners expect the rebate to come off the invoice. It doesn't. The rebate is a reimbursement — you pay for the work, then the City pays you back, up to $7,500. Knowing the exact payment sequence up front is the difference between a smooth claim and a nasty surprise.
The money timeline, step by step
- Pre-approval — $0 out of pocket. Your contractor prepares the itemized quote, the diagram of the proposed work, and the permit paperwork. You submit for pre-approval and pay nothing while the City reviews. Nothing may be installed yet.
- Pre-approval granted — the clock starts. You now have 6 months to complete the work and request final approval. This is also the moment your price is locked in with us — the quote the City approved is the quote you pay.
- Install day — you pay the contractor. This is the only real outflow: you pay the invoice for the installed work, HST included. Keep that invoice — it's the core document of your claim.
- Final approval request — within the 6-month window. The paid invoice, permit inspection results and photos go back to the City. (This is paperwork we prepare and submit for our clients.)
- The cheque arrives. After final approval, the City mails your rebate cheque directly to you. You are the payee — the money never passes through the contractor.
What counts toward the reimbursement
Eligible costs include contractor labour, materials and HST — the rebate is calculated on your real, tax-in invoice. The per-item caps: $6,000 for the sump pump itself, $1,500 for a storm backwater valve, $1,000 for foundation drain capping, $125 per disconnected downspout (max 4), camera inspection filling the rest — all under the $7,500 per-application cap.
Budgeting for the gap
Because reimbursement follows installation, plan to carry the invoice amount for the weeks between install day and the cheque. Two things make that easier: first, the amounts are known in advance — your estimate shows the gross price, the rebate, and your net cost before you commit; second, financing can bridge the gap so your real out-of-pocket stays close to the net cost throughout. Ask us about both when you book.
One rule can zero out the whole schedule: install anything before pre-approval and the rebate is $0, forever, for that work. The sequence above only works in order.
