Official Government Rebate Programs

Three programs. They stack.

1. City of Mississauga

Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate

Rebated up to

$7,500

100% of eligible costs

The main program, and the one that pays for the protection itself — the pump, the valve and the drainage work that stop stormwater getting into your basement in the first place. Each item has its own cap; together they reach the program maximum.

Pre-approval is required — the City must approve your application before any work starts, and work begun beforehand isn't eligible. We prepare and submit it for you, then book the install once it clears. Final approval must follow within 6 months.

2. City of Mississauga

Flood Resilience Rebate

Rebated up to

$3,000

50% of eligible costs

For homes that have already flooded. This one pays back half the cost of rebuilding in materials that survive the next one — waterproof floors and walls inside, drainage and waterproofing outside.

  • Topsoil and grading
  • Silicone sealant, eavestrough and downspouts
  • Waterproof membranes and coatings
  • Foundation repair — concrete walls and floor
  • Weeping tile (foundation drain) repair
  • Window wells, covers and self-closing air bricks

Interior

  • Waterproof flooring — tile, vinyl, terrazzo, recycled plastic lumber
  • Waterproof floor membranes and screeds
  • Foundation floor crack sealing
  • Waterproof paint and moisture-resistant wall panels
  • Moisture alarms and flood barriers
  • Closed-cell insulation; raising utilities and appliances

Structural

  • Concrete — pre-cast and formed in place
  • Decay- and preservative-treated wood
  • Aluminum and steel building frames
  • Marine- and exterior-grade plywood

Only for homes that flooded on or after July 8, 2013, and you'll need proof — an insurance claim, a 311 record, or timestamped photos. It stacks with the Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate on the same home.

3. Region of Peel

Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate

Rebated up to

$1,500

60% of installed cost

A one-way valve on your sanitary sewer line that snaps shut when the municipal sewer backs up, keeping sewage out of your basement. Different pipe, different program from the storm valve above — and they can be installed on the same visit.

  • Backwater valve on the sanitary sewer line
  • Installation labour and materials
  • Building permit and inspection
  • Tax included in the eligible amount

Peel covers 60% of the invoice including tax, so your share lands around $1,000. A permit is required before installation, and it's one rebate per home per 10 years. Stacks with both City programs.

Why You Actually Need This

When a major storm hits Mississauga, the city's sewer system can overflow — and that water has nowhere to go but into your basement. This isn't a rare event. It happens every few years, and it's getting worse.

Backwater Valve

Sits on your sewer line and stays open under normal conditions. The moment the city's sewer pressure reverses during a storm, the valve snaps shut — physically blocking sewage from entering your home.

Installed in a pit beneath your basement floor, it automatically collects groundwater that builds up around your foundation during heavy rain and pumps it safely away before it can rise into your home.

Installed on your main sanitary sewer line — the pipe carrying waste from toilets, sinks, and showers. If the municipal sewer overloads during heavy rain, this valve automatically closes to prevent raw sewage from backing up into your basement.

Flood History Required

If Your Basement Was Flooded After July 8, 2013

You may also qualify for the Flood Resilience Rebate — an additional program on top of the standard protection package. To apply you'll need: proof of flooding (insurance claim, repair receipts, or timestamped photos), proof of completed work (invoices with contractor info and cost breakdown), and photos of the installation.

🔨Flood Resilience Upgrades
Up to $3,000 (50% covered)

If your basement flooded on or after July 8, 2013, the City will reimburse 50% of what you spend on flood-resilient upgrades — up to $3,000. This covers both interior work (flood-resistant walls, floors, raised electrical, moisture alarms) and exterior measures (foundation waterproofing, window wells, grading) designed to minimize damage if it happens again.
