Why You Actually Need This

When a major storm hits Mississauga, the city's sewer system can overflow — and that water has nowhere to go but into your basement. This isn't a rare event. It happens every few years, and it's getting worse.

Backwater valve animation showing how it closes during a sewer backup

Backwater Valve

Sits on your sewer line and stays open under normal conditions. The moment the city's sewer pressure reverses during a storm, the valve snaps shut — physically blocking sewage from entering your home.

Sump pump diagram showing groundwater being pumped away from foundation

Sump Pump

Installed in a pit beneath your basement floor, it automatically collects groundwater that builds up around your foundation during heavy rain and pumps it safely away before it can rise into your home.

Flooded basement

Repair Costs Are Brutal

A single basement flood costs $20,000–$50,000+ to remediate — mould removal, flooring, drywall, electrical. Prevention costs a fraction of that, and the government pays for most of it.

Home insurance policy

Insurance May Not Cover You

Most standard home insurance policies exclude sewer backup and overland flooding unless you have a specific rider — and even then, payouts are capped and claims raise your premiums.

Up to $12,000 in government rebates

Up to $12,000 Is Available

The City of Mississauga and Region of Peel have money set aside right now for exactly this. Proper Plumbing GTA handles every step — assessment, permits, installation, and rebate submission.

Why Most Mississauga Homeowners Never Claim This Money

📋

The Paperwork Is Overwhelming

Pre-approvals, building permits, multiple programs, contractor coordination. Most homeowners start the process and give up. We handle every document, from first assessment to final rebate submission.

🤷

They Don't Know They Qualify

If you own a detached, semi-detached, duplex, or townhouse in Mississauga, you almost certainly qualify for $7,500–$9,000 in rebates. No flood history required.

💰

The Money Is Already Set Aside

The City of Mississauga and Region of Peel budget this money every year for basement flooding prevention. It's allocated for homeowners like you. It doesn't carry forward if you don't claim it.

What Gets Installed — And Why It Protects Your Home

Each service targets a different way water enters your basement — here's what we install and why.

Most Popular

Our Recommended Package

💧

Sump Pump

Up to $6,000

City of Mississauga

A submersible pump installed beneath your basement floor. It collects groundwater that builds up around your foundation during rain and pumps it safely away from your home — automatically, every time it storms.

  • Eliminates the most common cause of Mississauga basement flooding
  • Runs automatically — no action required during storms
  • Covered almost entirely by the City rebate
🚧

Storm Backwater Valve

Up to $1,500

City of Mississauga

A one-way mechanical valve on your stormwater lateral — the pipe connecting your foundation drain to the city storm sewer. Water flows out freely under normal conditions. During a sewer backup, the valve closes automatically to block stormwater from entering your home.

  • Automatic protection — no maintenance or action required
  • Blocks stormwater from pushing back through your foundation drain
  • Covered up to $1,500 by the City Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate
🛡️

Sanitary Backwater Valve

Up to $1,500 (60% of cost)

Region of Peel

Installed on your main sanitary sewer line — the pipe carrying waste from toilets, sinks, and showers. If the municipal sewer overloads during heavy rain, this valve automatically closes to prevent raw sewage from backing up into your basement.

  • Protects against sewage backup — the worst type of basement flood
  • Funded by Region of Peel — stacks with City programs on the same home
  • 60% of installation cost covered, up to $1,500

Other Available Services

🔒

Drain Capping

Up to $1,000

City of Mississauga

Your foundation drain used to connect directly to the city's storm sewer. During heavy rain, that's a two-way pipe — city water pushes back into your home. Drain capping permanently seals that connection. Your sump pump takes over.

  • Closes the door on stormwater entering through your foundation drain
  • Always done alongside sump pump installation
  • Permanent fix — not a patch
🏠

Downspout Disconnection

Up to $500 ($125 each)

City of Mississauga

In older Mississauga homes, roof downspouts drain underground into the foundation drain system. During heavy rain this overloads the sewer and pushes water back toward your home. Disconnection redirects that water to your lawn — away from your foundation.

  • Removes a major source of water overload that backs up into your basement
  • Redirected water drains naturally into your yard
  • Required as part of sump pump installations under the rebate

Flood History Required

If Your Basement Was Flooded After July 8, 2013

You may also qualify for the Flood Resilience Rebate — an additional program on top of the standard protection package.

🔨Flood Resilience Upgrades
Up to $3,000 (50% covered)

If your home has flooded since July 8, 2013, this program covers 50% of rebuilding your basement with flood-resistant materials — so that if it happens again, the damage is minimal and repairs are fast.

  • Covers water-resistant flooring, walls, raised electrical panels & moisture alarms
  • Reduces future repair costs dramatically
  • Requires documented flood history after July 8, 2013
