The Peel Sanitary Backwater Valve Rebate: 60% Back, Explained

Mississauga homeowners deal with two levels of municipal government, and each runs its own flood rebate. The City of Mississauga handles the big Basement Flooding Prevention program; the Region of Peel runs a quieter one that's arguably the best value in the whole stack: 60% back on a sanitary backwater valve, up to $1,500, tax included.

What exactly is covered

The rebate applies to a backwater valve installed on your sanitary sewer line — the pipe that carries wastewater from your toilets, sinks and laundry. (The storm lateral is a different pipe; a valve there falls under the City's program instead. Same device, different pipe, different funder — and both can be claimed on the same home.)

The 60% is calculated on your invoice including tax, covering the valve, labour and restoration, to the $1,500 maximum.

The rules that matter

  • Permit first. A municipal building permit must be issued before installation, and the finished work passes an inspection. No permit, no rebate — and an uninspected sewer alteration can haunt a future home sale anyway.
  • Eligible homes: residential singles, semis and townhomes in Mississauga, Brampton or Caledon. Multi-unit dwellings sharing a sewer lateral are excluded.
  • The 10-year clock: one rebate per residence every 10 years — so the install should be done right the first time.

How fast the money comes

Peel is the quickest payer of the three programs: applications are typically processed in about 5 business days, with the cheque arriving in 4–6 weeks. Like the City's program, it's a reimbursement — you pay the invoice, then the Region pays you back.

Why we rarely install the valve alone

Opening the basement floor is the expensive part of a valve install. If your home also needs a sump pump — and most homes without one do — doing both in one project shares that cost and unlocks the City's $7,500 program on top of Peel's $1,500. That combination is our most common project for a reason.
