Your Sump Pump Fails Exactly When You Need It: Power Cuts and Backups

There is a design flaw in the way most basements are protected, and it only shows up on the worst night of the year.

A primary sump pump runs on mains electricity. The storms that produce enough groundwater to need it are the same storms that bring down power lines. So the pump stops at the precise moment the water peaks.

How fast it goes wrong

In heavy rain a working sump pump might cycle every minute or two. Take the power away and the pit fills, then the water finds the floor. Homeowners who have lived through it describe going from dry to several inches in well under an hour.

Your two options

Battery backup. A second pump with its own deep-cycle battery, charged from the mains and switching over automatically. Runtime depends on the battery and how hard it has to work — typically several hours of intermittent pumping. The battery needs replacing every few years, and that is the maintenance item people forget.

Water-siphon (water-powered) backup. Runs off your municipal water pressure with no electricity at all, using flow through a venturi to lift water out of the pit. No battery to maintain and no runtime limit while the water supply holds. It does consume city water while running, and it needs adequate pressure.

What the rebates say — and this differs

• Niagara Falls WRAP: secondary pumps eligible, "including battery-powered or water-siphon systems"
• St. Catharines: secondary backup pumps eligible, battery-powered or water-siphon
• Halton Region: funds the work, but water-powered backup sump pumps are specifically not eligible

That last one matters. In Halton, choosing a water-powered backup takes it outside the subsidy. Check before you buy, not after.

Which to choose

If you are in Halton, battery. If you are elsewhere and on a well or low water pressure, battery. If you travel and cannot check a battery's condition, water-siphon is more forgiving. If you want maximum runtime in a long rural outage, water-siphon while the supply holds.

Test it before you need it

Pour a bucket into the pit and confirm both pumps run. Do it in spring and autumn. A backup pump nobody has tested in four years is a battery in a box, not a flood defence.
